Sabra

As my thesis project for my MFA I chose to reinterpret the costume design and narrative for Marvel's Israeli superhero Sabra. Sabra is the English version of the Hebrew word Tzabar, the opuntia cactus on which the prickly pear grows. Tzabar/Tzabarit (male/female) is a Hebrew nickname for native Israeli born Jewish person. Therefore, it was natural that I took inspiration from the opuntia cactus for the design and concept for Sabra while incorporating design lines and symbols from traditional Jewish costumes. I printed the fabric utilizing a Cricut machine, and made Sabra's new cactus spines from Simpact 60 urethane by Smooth-On.
